Last night as the snow descended upon washington like a light frosting on Petromala's nostrils in the eighties i found myself contemplating the merits of heading over to town hall. While the thought of downing a shitty bottle of Malbec gave me a stronger quiver in my pants than a bakers dozen of turtle eggs, i became oddly flaccid when i thought about what might be going on there. The smell of Barbour wax wafting through the air like a bad cross-field pass and transplant toddlers teeming with newfound tier melded in my mind to create a menagerie of overplayed filth that reminded me of a bad locker room mixtape some freshman thought was hot and never got swapped out. I long for the days when i could hang my hat next to my helmet at the corner of Wisconsin and M. An unspoiled bar in Georgetown and Glover Park is like a two way middie, hard to find.

Town Hall was teeming last night, but it did indeed have that circle jerk feel that is so typical on Tuesday nights. Wasn't Nathan's a big hot spot in the 80's?

Nathan's was the last of a kind. But you have Serendipity coming. Won't that fill the void?

An ice cream shop won't fill the void.

The only place to be during a snowstorm in DC is Martin's. |

Never will there be, a place like Nathans

If serendipity keeps the bar we can toss the ice cream out the front door and try to reclaim the place, but first it has to open.

I'm thinking a bar at Serendipity could be great for snowstorms. They have amazing hot chocolate that would be great with some Baileys before heading out in the snow for a Georgetown bar crawl.

What caused the downfall of this place? I hear a lot of glory stories about it from the old guys.

whoa. hot chocolate at nathans? dear boy, are you out of your mind? that corner can't be disgraced. toss the cocoa out the door with the ice cream and stick with the manly booze. no self respecting bartender ever served COCOA at nathans. not once. not ever. (taking nothing away from hot chocolate, only not at that location, please)

Rumor has it Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez daughter is running the PR for Serendipity DC. Sitting atop her penthouse in the Ritz, this potential 'Potomac Fever' cast member is adamant in bringing Upper East Side charm to the corner of Wisconsin and M. Good luck Erika. 100 bucks the homeless guy with the Vinyard Vines hat 'new york crosses' his way over to that side of the intersection.

Some of those involved say there's big money behind it and a Redskins connection.

The Redskin connection is that Rodrigo is Jack Kent Cooke's step son and gets to play with all of his mommy's money. This project has been a train wreck from almost the start. They've been renting that place for how many fucking thousands of dollars a month for over a year now without selling a single mother fucking sundae. It should not take that long. I hear there's infighting and that's why they keep having to push back the opening. |

Someone sent this thread to me and I'm grateful. Thanks for sharing memories of Nathans. In its day it was incomparable. (Really on my late husband's watch, not mine, but I tried). A lot of the lacrosse memorabilia is now at George, which has the vibe Nathans had when it first opened (though Nathans had a dining room, full menu and got a rave review from the WaPost restaurant critic). I have all the sailing prints and hope to sell them. Honestly, they still carry the smoky scent of that place!! Again, thank you.
