THE WATERFRONT ICE SKATING RINK IN GEORGETOWN, FRIDAY, 7:30PM, WITH THE KENNEDY CENTER IN THE FAR BACKGROUND
The question asked most often this week in Georgetown is, "have you been down to see the new ice rink?" Since Monday, skaters have been enjoying the new rink at Washington Harbor. It's been especially pleasant with the good weather.
THE VIEW OF THE RINK FROM THE WATERSIDE
I haven't skated the ice yet, but I did notice there are instructors to help beginners. A friend said the skate shop works well and the rental skates are good. The secret, as time goes on and the skates get used, will be to keep them sharpened. Sharp blades make for better skating.
THE ENTRANCE TO THE SKATING RINK FROM K STREET
The rink is decorated for Christmas and Christmas music is piped in over speakers. The rink is ringed with holiday lights, but because they are LED they are somewhat dim or subdued. It seems no one has yet figured out how to make a bright white LED light. Instead they appear to have a light blue or mauve tint.
The rink is a positive for Georgetown. Never before have I seen so many people, especially families, headed to the waterfront on a cool November night. Also, all the outside tables at the new Farmers, Fishers and Bakers restaurant were filled. One of the tables has a firepit, which will become especially popular when real winter weather arrives.
