Woke up this morning, lolled in my crisp cool sheets, and thanked my lucky service contract that I had working air conditioning. I was bold and confident about my good fortune, thinking, "Imagine if it failed on a day like today?" Because of routine spring maintenance I dismissed the thought as quickly as it arrived.
Sure enough, by noon the a/c was down and the indoor temp was on the rise. Fortunately a surprisingly ebullient technician arrived around 7 p.m. and headed to the roof, reporting back, "It's just a fuse. It can be fixed!!" I handed him a second glass of ice water.
What an amazing power I have, tempting fate to pull a trick in my favor -- but why doesn't it work with the lottery?
