A few weeks ago Facebook made clear it would share my personal info with the advertisphere, as if it was a good thing for me. Now, it is Verizon. If you have Verizon Online you likely received the same email. If they want to give me a kick back, like free service, we can talk. Otherwise, fuhdgeddaboutit.
Here's the email that arrived, naturally, during the dinner hour:
Dear Valued Customer, en
Your privacy is an important priority at Verizon. (Ah, I don't think so.) We want to let you know that Verizon will soon participate in a program that will improve the ability of advertisers to reach our Verizon Online customers based on your physical address (and, in so doing, make us a few coins). The goal is to provide online ads that may be more relevant to you (note to Verison: the logic is oxymoronic).
This program uses your address to determine whether you reside in a local area an advertiser is trying to reach (because you refuse to respond to them any other way, and we've offered to separate the desirable from the undesirable zipcodes). However, Verizon won’t share your address with advertisers as part of this process. Advertisers won’t know it’s you specifically or where you actually live. (But they'll know more about me than they do now.) If you do not want us to allow advertisers to send you ads based on your geographic area you can let us know by selecting here. (Yes, thank you. Done.)
Sincerely,
Verizon
